Banks & Money

Experiences with local banks, apps, and how to keep money flowing between Thailand and abroad. Getting set up takes some effort, but once done, it works smoothly.

Opening a Thai Bank Account

Most major banks (Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, SCB) will open accounts for foreigners, but requirements vary by branch. Having a long-term visa helps significantly. Some branches are more expat-friendly than others.

Bring: passport, visa, proof of address (lease agreement or utility bill), and a Thai phone number. Some branches may ask for a work permit or letter from your employer.

Mobile Banking Apps

Thai banking apps are surprisingly good. K PLUS (Kasikorn), SCB EASY, and Bangkok Bank Mobile are all solid. PromptPay transfers are instant and free between Thai banks.

You can link your account to your phone number or national ID (if you have one) for easy transfers. QR code payments are everywhere.

International Transfers

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is the go-to for most expats. Good rates, transparent fees, and reliable delivery. You can hold multiple currencies and get a debit card.

For larger amounts, consider using your bank's international wire transfer. Shop around for rates — they vary significantly between banks.

ATMs & Cash

Thai ATMs charge 220 THB per withdrawal for foreign cards. To minimize fees, withdraw larger amounts less frequently, or get a Thai bank account.

Cash is still king for street food and small shops, but card acceptance is growing rapidly in Bangkok.
