Visas & Immigration

High-level notes on marriage visas, extensions, and dealing with immigration offices in Bangkok. None of this is legal advice — just lessons learned from personal experience.

Marriage Visa (Non-Immigrant O)

If you're married to a Thai national, the Non-Immigrant O visa is your path to staying long-term. The initial visa can be obtained from a Thai embassy abroad or converted from a tourist visa inside Thailand.

Key requirements typically include: marriage certificate, spouse's ID and house registration, proof of income or savings (400k THB in a Thai bank account), and various forms from immigration.

90-Day Reporting

Every 90 days you need to report your address to immigration. You can do this online (when it works), by mail, or in person. The online system at tm47.immigration.go.th is hit-or-miss but worth trying first.

Pro tip: Set a calendar reminder for day 80. The window is 15 days before to 7 days after your due date.

Annual Extensions

Your visa extension needs to be renewed annually. Start gathering documents at least a month before expiry. The process involves a home visit from immigration officers to verify your address.

Documents needed: TM.7 form, photos, passport copies, spouse documents, bank statements, and the 1,900 THB fee.

Disclaimer: Immigration rules change frequently. Always verify current requirements with the official immigration website or a qualified visa agent.
